Terry Stiles To Be Honored At NAIOP’s Awards Of Excellence

During its Awards of Excellence banquet on March 15, NAIOP South Florida will pay tribute to commercial real estate giant Terry Stiles for his unparalleled contributions to South Florida’s business community.

Through more than four decades of leadership, Stiles led the transformation of downtown Fort Lauderdale and helped position Broward County as one of the most desirable locations for business, culture and living.

In recognition of Stiles’ pivotal work and a lifetime of achievements, the South Florida chapter of NAIOP, a Commercial Real Estate Development Organization, has donated to Nova Southeastern University’s campaign to create the Terry Stiles School of Real Estate Development, a master’s degree program at NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship.

Funds from this campaign also will allow worthy students to complete their studies by providing scholarships in Terry’s name.

“Look anywhere in Fort Lauderdale and you’ll see the legacy that Terry left behind,” said NAIOP South Florida Executive Director Jules Morgan. “He shaped the very foundation of South Florida as it stands today through iconic developments in all areas of the region. Terry was and continues to be an inspiration to all those who knew him. He was dedicated to not only creating a thriving region of economic prosperity, but also to supporting industry professionals and organizations such as NAIOP. While we have been fortunate enough to recognize Terry in the past for his momentous accomplishments and transformational endeavors, today marks our most important recognition of all – a celebration of the life and legacy of a man who believed anything was possible.”

Stiles was a member of NAIOP South Florida for more than 35 years and served as the chapter’s president from 1982 to 1984 and as national chairman in 1998, leading the executive committee and spearheading development initiatives that benefitted chapters across the country. For his efforts, he was awarded the illustrious NAIOP Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.

The 2018 Awards of Excellence ceremony and dinner will take place on Thursday, March 15 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at The Ritz Carlton, located at 1 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The Awards of Excellence recognize the individuals and organizations whose achievements have contributed to the local commercial real estate industry, benefitted the regional business environment and facilitated economic growth in South Florida.

Terry W. Stiles: Celebrating The Life And Memory Of An Industry Icon

We, along with the entire CRE community, are deeply saddened by the loss of our great leader and friend, Terry Stiles.

Terry’s passion, energy and unyielding devotion to bettering communities across the Southeast were the source for innovations in real estate that will continue to enrich lives for years to come. Terry’s vision helped to shape the skyline of Fort Lauderdale and better every city and community he touched. He is an inspiration to us all.

Terry’s greatest love was for his family. He is survived by his wife Jamie, son Ken Stiles married to Brittany Stiles, daughters Carrie Tidwell married to Jamie Tidwell, and Tresa Hernandez-Stiles engaged to Erik Johnson, as well as six grandchildren – Madison Lynn Tidwell, Cole Alexander Hernandez, Jake Stiles Tidwell, Annalise Olivia Hernandez, Hudson Weylin Stiles and Easton Wyatt Stiles. In addition, Terry has two sisters, Carole Parks married to Norman Parks and Donna Tweeton.

Stiles Purchases Downtown Fort Lauderdale Property

An affiliate of Stiles Corp. paid $13.1 million for a Bank of America drive-thru facility in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a property that could be primed for redevelopment.

The bank sold the 1.45-acre site at 212 S.E. 2nd Ave. — a block north of Las Olas Boulevard — to 212 Partners LLC, an affiliate of Fort Lauderdale-based Stiles Corp.

The 2,797-square-foot financial facility was built in 1983.

Stiles Corp. has developed many office buildings and residential towers in downtown Fort Lauderdale. In a recent feature story on his company, founder and co-CEO Terry Stiles told the Business Journal that he’d like to build a 300,000-square-foot office tower in downtown Fort Lauderdale and the Bank of America drive-thru teller site was one of the possible locations for that project. He’s also exploring putting the office building at the Broward College downtown campus – right next to the drive-thru – as Stiles Corp. is one of three parties in an ongoing request for proposals process with the college to redevelop that site.

So with the acquisition from Bank of America, Stiles Corp. can tell BC that it would have an even larger property to develop if it wins the bidding.

Stiles Corp. Vice Chairman Doug Eagon said it has been trying to acquire the Bank of America property since 2008 and the bank finally put it on the market. He said the property would have the office tower, or be used in combination with the college site – should Stiles be selected – build office and other uses. Stiles will now start approaching prospective office tenants, he added.

 

“We believe in the downtown office market,” Eagon said. “We think that this is the time to be planning for the development of the next office building downtown…Vacancies have declined over the last few years. We understand what tenants might want to come downtown. We understand the tenants with expansion needs.”

Stiles Realty Appoints New President

Stiles Realty, the brokerage and leasing division of Stiles, today announced the appointment of industry veteran Paul Marko as president.

In this role, Mr. Marko will assume leadership of the division, directing its market expansion throughout Florida as well as its strategic effort to grow third-party business. Mr. Marko will take over for Stiles’ current president of Realty, Tom Kates, who is retiring after 27 years with the Company.

As president, Mr. Marko will play an integral role in helping Stiles to execute on its strategy to increase Stiles’ footprint across the state while further penetrating its core South Florida markets. In addition to increasing third-party leasing business, he will be responsible for enhancing operations, broker retention, recruiting and professional development. Mr. Marko will also focus on driving growth by leveraging client relationships across the Stiles’ various service divisions, including Property Management, Construction, Architecture, Tenant Improvement and Development.

“Paul’s tremendous expertise combined with the unique structure of Stiles will enable Stiles Realty to achieve the growth we expect in the short-and long-term,” said Stiles Chief Executive Officer, Terry Stiles.  “Paul has a deep knowledge of the local market, proven ability to build long-term relationships with clients and track record of success in the leasing and brokerage arena. With him on the team we will be better positioned to take advantage of new market opportunities while also maintaining our reputation as the leading provider of commercial real estate spaces throughout Florida.”

Prior to joining Stiles, Mr. Marko served for 12 years as First Vice President at CBRE (NYSE: CBG), the world’s largest commercial real estate services firm, according to the company. He also served for six years with Codina Group/Codina Realty Services in a similar capacity.

Mr. Marko will be based in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is active in the community, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Broward Alliance, the local chapter of CoreNet Global, and Junior Achievement of South Florida. He is a native of Fort Lauderdale and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL.
